SCHERZO lands the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy

Scherzo (Wootton Bassett/ Persian Belle) landed an impressive victory in Qatar over the weekend to win the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy.


The 3-y-o colt was purchased by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock for €420,000 at the Arqana Arc Horses-In-Training sale for owners Alwasmiyah Stud.

CEPAHLUS (Cable Bay/Angels Wings) landed the four-timer at Newcastle with another impressive win. A great training performance by Charlie Hills and the team for owners Jerry Hinds and Philip Herbert. The son of Cable Bay was purchased from Highclere Stud by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock at Tattersalls Book 2 for only 11,000 gns. An exciting horse to follow this year!

It has been a very successful week in Doha with four winners, all purchased by Will Douglass at the Tattersalls Horses-In-Training Sale. Keel Bay (Starspangledbanner/Slieve), Swift One (No Nay Never/Flavia Tatiana), Wishaah (Oasis Dream/Mia Diletta) and Semper Augustus (Dutch Art/Pink Flames) were all victorious over the weekend. Cephalus lands the hat-trick, winning for the third time on the all-weather. Previous victories came at Chelmsford on 13th December under Cieren Fallon, followed by two wins under Marco Ghiani at both Southwell and Newcastle. Bought by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock for 11,000 gns from Highclere Stud at Tattersalls Book 2 for owners Jerry Hinds and Philip Herbert. The three-year-old is by Cable Bay, out of Angels Wings. A brilliant training performance by Charlie Hills.

Savyy Kingman, by Kingman out of Lady Linda, scores back-to-back victories to continue his consistent form at Happy Valley. In his last seven runs, he has not finished out of the top three. Purchased by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock as a yearling in 2018 for 300,000 gns, the four-year-old gelding has gone on to win over £290,000 in prize money.

As the yearling sale season draws to a close, it has been a very busy period for CGW Bloodstock. A total of 36 yearlings have been purchased in 2021, an increase of 9 from last year’s 27 yearlings purchased. A mixture of colts and fillies were bought by a range of sires including Frankel, Dubawi, Acclamation, Mehmas, Kodiac, Sea The Stars, Territories, El Kabeir, Mukhadram, Zoustar, Muhaarar, Footstepsinthesand, Australia, Ulysses, Lope de Vega, Almanzor, Galileo Gold, Churchill, Unfortunately, Oasis Dream, New Bay and Kingman. Kodiac and Sea The Stars were the most popular yearling sires purchased with 5 purchased by each sire. Yearlings bought ranged in price from £18,000 to the most expensive yearling purchased in Europe for €2,400,000 at Arqana August Yearling Sale. We wish the best of luck to all clients and hope some future stars have been found.
